Michael Steven Bublé is a Canadian singer, songwriter and actor. The song has proven successful on the adult contemporary charts, reaching number one in the U.S. on the chart week of January 30, 2010[4] and becoming the first song in history to debut at number one on Billboard Canada's ACchart.
Performance based - artist sings and dacnes with other characters also doing it - convention - Hint of narrative also with Michael being going after and charming the female character - hybridism
Mise-en-Scene
Setting = Supermarket - Friendly environment - makes star seem ordinary - matching Dyer's Paradox 1
Costume - casual jeans/jacket - relate to youth and general men wear - Uses & Gratifications Theory of Personal Identity
Lighting - high key through ambient light - highlights star - similar to Pharrell's 'Happy' and matches Dyers Star Theory - 0:48 Low key lighting occurs which matches Michaels frazzled mind and connotes a blossoming love
Camerawork
Establishing shot at start - urban town + supermarket = pop convention - sets the scene
Close-up at 0:22 - convention - showing off talent as a singer to audience - Goodwins Theory
Sound
Crescendo of instruments in chorus - major key - connotes happiness - pop convention in order to make audience feel good
Non-Diegetic throughout - piano used as part of the track - matches Michaels iconography of being classy and a 'swing' type singer.
Editing
Jump cut at 1:32 - shows NVC of female character closer up and emphasies the love aspect - expands narrative for audience - 1:40 jump cut is also used on Michael - goes closer to his face in order to show off his singing talent more - similar to other videos analysed
Fast-paced Editing with Straight cuts predominant - typical convention in order to reflect mood of the song - happy and upbeat - convention
Conclusion
Using the establishing shot to set the scene is good idea in order to catch the audiences attention to cause intrigue within them. Yet again fast-paced editing is used which is something we will most definitely be using in our project, as well as the use of jump cuts in order to reveal talent as performers and the NVC of said characters. These are all 3 things I will definitely be discussing the usage of with my group in order to make our music video most successful.
