Magazine Advert Analyses

Magazine Advertisements are a specific advert utilised within a magazine or similar print media texts. Reasonnig for it's use is to inform a target consumer about particular subjects or events in the world of today and are an extra promotional supplement for celebrities or others. The advertisement  will often match the particular genred magazine, so for example something that is advertising a film would be inplemented into a film magazine like EMPIRE, therefore to increase audience intrigue and appeal inside the film industry.

Olly Murs - 20/10/15

Mise-en-Scene

In the image, Olly is seen to be wearing a shirt, jacket, jeans and a fedora type hat. These connote somewhat masculinity and are typical pop artist costume, specifically Olly himself as he seems to merge old fashioned with the modern day (Dyer - Iconography). The set of the shot is an all white background which connotes proffessionalism and becomes aesthetically pleasing for the audience. In terms of blocking, Olly himself is seen from left to right, making him prominent to the viewer which therefore promotes him and his debut album (Goodwin)

Camerawork

Olly has presumably been photographed 8 times in a long shot displaying different moods and his typical cheeky persona he has that us as an audience knew of when he was on X Factor (Dyer - USP). These pictures have been converted into a wide shot to show all of his different personalities he possesses to make him seem exciteable and help the audience see who this upcoming artist is and if they should buy is debut album.

Typography/Font

The headline at the top 'Olly Murs' is in bold lettering placed at the top in the centre of the advert. This makes his name prominent and eye catching to the audience, with the sans serif font helping that aspect. The colour red makes it vibrant and adds some aesthetic to the page too and helps Olly sem present to the audience (Dyer). The straplines at the bottom displaying the information about the new album are less prominent but still in that statement like sans serif font to really help inform the audience and using things like "#1 single etc" makes him seem successful and fufills its overall purpose.

Layout

This particular advertisement takes a minimalistic view and gets straight to the point without cluttering it. His name at the top really promotes this new upcoming popstar, the image is central letting us know what he presents himself like and the informative print at the bottom nicely summarises the advert. Giving us an early impression on Olly Murs himself. (Uses & Gratifications - Personal Relationship)

Mise-en-Scene

  • Black T-Shirt, necklace - connotes simplicity, matched Ed's chilled, cool vibe (Dyer - Iconography)

  • NVC = happy, positive, supporting his personality, attractive for the audience and even shows his happiness for promoting is own debut album too.

  • Therefore matching typical pop conventions of a positive, 'togetherness' vibe it normally always produces.

  • Low Key lighting contradicts his presence in the close up image (Dyer -Paradox 1 - Present and Absent)

Camerawork

  • Mid-shot to Close-up - portrays and really shows off Ed's facial expression and makes it more personal for audiences to really see what this new artist looks like helps audiences escape from their life at that moment into someone else who is hoping to become a pop success (Uses & Gratifications - Diversion)

Ed Sheeran - 25/10/15

Typography/Font

  • Sans serif font - simple, factual, proffessional aesthetic

  • Central bottom - natural reading eyeline from Ed's face down to the text, prominent, easy to find and similar to Olly Murs' advert - promotional

  • White colour connotes purity and supports the simplistic aspect Ed himself possesses - orange colour matches the album colour and Ed's ginger hair colour - stands out - promotes the artist (Dyer - USP)

  • Simlarly to Olly, positive language about the artist is used with the quote that can be seen at the bottom of the advert - promotional - big up the artist - popularity = typical pop artist convention.

Layout

  • Artist takes up most of the image - centre of attention - similar to that of Olly Murs' advert

  • The name of the artist is near the bottom with the information, puts more emphasis on the image of Ed himself - information is of a smaller font summarises the advert yet again and attempts to persuade audiences to buy the album before the flick over to the next page.

Drake vs Chris Brown Comparison - 27/10/15

CeeLo Green vs Wretch 32 Comparison - 1/11/15

Example vs MIKA Comparison - 4/11/15

Example v Mika

Mise-en-Scene: Example uses a variety of costumes in each picture to reflect personality - casual clothing relates to youth e.g. Uses & Gratifications Theory of Personal Identity/Mika uses a presumed shirt in the greyscalre picture of him in top right - old fashioned but also smart wear - pop convention as it relates to other magazine adverts analysed. Example has a setting of a white background helping the star stand out and be focused on - Dyer's Star Theory/Mika's advert has a unclear, conceptual feel towards it due to vibrant colurs, bedroom, stars, planets - Dyer's Paradox 2 of ordinary and extraordinary.

Camerawork: Example uses mid shots in each of his photos - emphasises his presence to the audience and his unique actions in the pictures help building an initial personal relationship between him and audience/Mika also uses a mid-shot of himself in the one photo he is present in - the audience get to see the artist himself using synergy with a old fashioned vibe in order to attract a variety of audiences.

Typography/Language: Example uses bold upper casing sans serif font in order for the words to stand out more in order to promote his new album (Goodwin) - the white and black colour contrast is simple and easy on the eye being aesthetically pleasing/Mika's name is bold sans serif to yet again emphasise his presence and importance, with additional information in smaller font but still upper casing to make it stand out. The tagline "the boy who knew too much" underneath his name makes him seem smart therefore promotional again.

Layout: Example uses 12 individual images oh himself doing different things - gives off different sides to his personality as he looks cheeky, funny etc being a pop convention - this will make the audience like the artists positivity therefore helping him promote his album more effectively - letters and language are situated central to the page being a natural reading level -with in the bottom right "available on iTunes" emphasisng his promotionial motivation/Mika's layout is somewhat disfigured - therefore relating to his personality and almost rejecting pop conventions compared to Examples advert sticking to his own perceived iconography - typography is mostly in the bottom right being in an unusual eye line for the reader - puts attention towards the conceptual imagery and emphasises positivity with all the typical pop bright colours used.

Conclusion: The use of different images in examples advert is a method I like very much so and will discuss the possibility of it with my group as we could use each of us in a different image similar to our preliminary task - emphasising our own USP and continuity. Whereas the colour usage in Mikas advert is the one thing I can only think of using in our own magazine advert in order to attract audiences.

Conclusion - 5/11/15
